Flemish painting and De Jonckheere Gallery's old master paintings

Provenance: private collection
This small panel takes the traditional typology of the Breughelian river view in a highly personal direction, simplifying it. A few figures are preparing to embark on the riverbank and a second boat on the river is enough to enliven the scene without overshadowing its charm with overcrowded anecdotal detail.
In fact, the painter's attention seems to have been entirely focused on the rendering a sky with chromatic values that are at once subtle and dazzling, shimmering with light and - somewhat in the style seen in the work of P. Bril - clouding the definition of the city in the background.
His fascination with the botanical, fed by the influence of the Frankenthal school and of his friend Govaerts is also evident in the characteristic treatment of the branches, bushes, stumps and other brush, a hallmark that functions as a virtual crypto-signature for this artist's rarely signed body of work.
